“You cannot teach anybody anything. You can only help them discover it within themselves”

Plato

The Youth Programme is a one-day experiential learning programme specifically designed to foster self-awareness in pupils in terms of who they are as individuals and as family members.  Developing good relationships is fundamental to effective teaching and effective learning and the most successful approaches to learning and development seek to empower pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and personal decisions.  Through the use of the Personal Values Inventory questionnaire (Strength Deployment Inventory - SDI®), the programme encourages individuals to explore the following questions:

  • How do I see others?
  • How do I see myself?
  • What motivates me and how does that affect my behaviour?
  • How do I react when faced with conflict and/or opposition?
  • What can I do differently?

The social and emotional aspects of learning are the underpinning qualities and skills that help us to manage life and learning effectively.  With the involvement of teachers and parents, the Youth Programme empowers and encourages self-awareness and development in six key areas:

  • self awareness - knowing and valuing oneself and understanding what ‘makes us tick’
  • the management of feelings – understanding and managing emotions
  • motivation and behaviour – ‘why we do what we do’
  • empathy -  understanding the thoughts and feelings of others
  • forming positive relationships - building, maintaining and improving relationships
  • conflict – understanding what ‘winds us up’, identifying conflict in others and developing conflict management strategies
  • The SDI® also explores the differences that exist between pupils, parents and teachers.  The SDI® can help teachers to identify ways to approach pupils, parents and colleagues of varying Motivational Value Systems and how to make their teaching appeal to every Motivational Value System type.  It will aid teachers in understanding their pupils better and create a more positive work environment in which teachers support one another, communicate effectively and work together.
